Because she did not get a part in the lay and yet, her parents think she has a part. She also felt trapped because she wasn't being called Maria Isabel Salazar Lopez but she was being called Mary Lopez not even close to her real name.
Maria feels that she is trapped because she didn't tell her parents that she wasn't going to sing and that she was called Mary Lopez instead of Maria Isabel Salazar Lopez and when she was called Mary Lopez she thought it was someone-els and so she didn't get a part in the pageant.
I think that Maria Isabel was feeling trapped because she was the new kid. She was also feeling trapped because she was not being called by her real name. So she did not realize she was being called on when the teacher said "Mary Lopez" So she did not have a chance of going to the winter pageant.

I think that she feels trapped because she had to move and in her new school there is two other girls named Maria. Her teacher calls her Mary Lopez when it is Maria Isabel Salazar Lopez. She wants to be in the play but she can't and she also can't sing her favorite song of Hanuka. But at the end of the story she gets to be called Maria Isabel Salazar Lopez and gets to be in the play.
