1. Girls are not aloud at logging camp, only mean and boys. Also Marven is the one to carry on the family name. With out the boy or man the last name of the family won't get carried on.
2. They might. But they made the decision that day because of influenza sickness in the city of Duluth. They also made him go so he could become a man. There is possibility they might, but not as much as the day that he did go.
1. Marven's parents send him away because the Influenza had made his aunt Sadie die. Since Marven was the only boy he could be the only one to keep the family name (or last name). Because he's the only one to get married and have the female take his name and keep it going.
2. I don't think that parents would do this today because now if someone's sick you can just get medicine. And most of the time now Influenza isn't that bad where it could kill someone.
His mom and dad didn't send his sisters because they are to small and probly would get hurt. The would not because if he had the right medicen he would be fine.

Currently I teach 4th grade, I am the mother of 2 kids: my hero, a son who served 2 tours of duty in Iraq as a U.S. Marine and a awesome daughter in middle school.
